Basics for Beginners: How to move Go stones like a pro

Before you know how to play like a professional, you can prepare yourself and be one step ahead of the game by holding your stones like a pro! Before spectators witness the techniques of your playing, they can easily judge your level by looking at the way you hold your stones (Go pieces).

Go stones are held in a very peculiar manner. One must effectively "clamp" it between one's index and third fingers (third finger on top of the stone, index beneath the stone), so that the stone is secure but also easy to place down and has relative amount of mobility.

Left is proper way to hold it; right image demonstrates the wrong way of holding a Go stone.

Most beginners hold a Go stone between their thumb and index finger, and these people are pretty conspicuous in a sea of Go players. So, be one step ahead of the game of your fellow beginners by learning how to properly hold a Go stone!

Think of your index and third fingers as chopsticks, holding or "clamping" the food (Go stone). To pick up the stone, your index finger will gently slide slightly under the Go stone, and your third finger will apply pressure on top of the Go stone to keep the stone in place. Now you're ready to move the Go stone to the desired intersection. When placing down the stone, be sure to first slide out your index finger from underneath the Go stone, followed by your third finger.

Below are some more picture examples of how to properly hold the stone:

If you don't get it at first, don't worry! You'll get the hang of it soon. Good luck!
