Originated from ancient China, Go is a strategic game said to have existed at least 2500-4000 years ago. It was thought to have been used by Chinese military generals to strategize placement of their troops, symbolizing the two opposing sides with black and white stones.
Through early trade, Go (围棋 weiqi) was spread to Korea and Japan. Go was taught in ancient Chinese schools along with writing (毛笔字), playing instruments, and drawing. It was often played by the noblemen and noblewomen of ancient China.
Succeeding the 1970's, international championships have been held for the top of the professionals to compete. Annual cups include the Samsung Cup and Fujitsu Cup, while the quadrennial World Ing Cup offers $1 million in prizes.
On the amateur level, worldwide championships include the World Amateur Go Championship, World Pairs Go Championship, and more.
As Go becomes increasingly more noticed in the Western world, many websites have started to offer teachings in the fundamental aspects of Go. My blog serves the same purpose; please don't hesitate to ask questions in the comments below!
